Wellington Weekend

So as the post title suggests we just spent the weekend in our Capital city, the city I was born in – Wellington! I don’t think we could have got a better day on Saturday, it seemed as if everyone in Wellington had come out of hibernation to enjoy the amazing weather as well!We drove down after work on Friday as I saw a deal for the Rydges hotel during the week $129 for the night including a fully cooked breakfast for two. Add on the $5 credit card charge and $30 for 24 hours of valet parking (Yes we were lazy) and it wasn’t too expensive, all be it more expensive than the backpackers we usually stay in.

I was highly impressed with the Staff at Rydges, they were very friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was awesome! I will have to eventually load some of those photo’s – I took them on my cellphone so I didn’t embarrass the BF.

Saturday we went for a walk and remembered that Leah had done a blog post about Somes Island a while back and that when I saw it I really wanted to go out there, so we brought our tickets for the ferry then went to get some snacks and a drink as there is nowhere to buy any food on the island, we came back to see the ferry just leaving (Woops! That ferry leaves right on time!), so instead we decided to walk down to Oriental bay then back through town, to look at a couple of shops, Nando’s for lunch, then some more walking before checking in to our next accommodation.

Yes we stayed at more than one place as the BF won a night at the Intercontinental at his Christmas do last year, including breakfast and a 3 course dinner. All very nice and a lot fancier than we normally stay at. To be honest the staff kind of got on my nerves a bit there, they were ok but I was much more impressed at the hospitality at Rydges. Dinner was yum, all be it small portions, I was glad I’d had a big lunch. I will also have to post pics of the food later as the BF would not have been impressed if I got my camera out in a nice restaurant!

Sunday we finally got on the ferry to Somes Island! I will do a separate post for this though 🙂

What did you do on the glorious weekend we just had?

  1. hey amanda – glad you enjoyed your weekend here, was such awesome weather for it! I was crocodile biking along ori bay/waterfront and eating gelato on sat, i should’ve looked out for you!!

My sis works at the intercontinental as the gym manager there – did you check out the gym? it has a pool that overlooks the waterfront (and a spa and sauna) – so nice! Interesting what you said about the staff, maybe I should pass on the comments? hehe.

    1. @Jane doh no I forgot to check out the gym, remembered at Rydges but not the Intercontinental, need to win another night there to check it out it sounds amazing! The staff were ok, just the Rydges one’s were friendlier, they proberly wern’t expecting two backpackers rocking on in there

Saturday was the most amazing day for being on Oriental parade right?!! I couldn’t find gelato when I really wanted it, except at one place down by Frank Kitts park with a HUGE line!

  2. Hiya – I came across your blog via Leah’s, so great to read about your visit to Wellington, I love it here! We sat on the deck enjoying some pinot gris and watched the sail boats float by. So pretty, love this country! Hope the rain and wind clears up from today but grudgingly trying to accept that fall is coming, not spring as I’m accustomed to back in America. Hope you have a good week!

    1. @Sara welcome! It’s always nice to see that I have more than 3 readers 🙂 Ugh you have the rain at the moment as well, not cool, winter seems to be coming early unfortunately.

I hope you enjoy your time in NZ, it’s an amazing country!! I love your blog as well, it’s so pretty and the pictures are amazing!
