A couple of weeks back I competed in the Wellington Short Triathlon and thought I should do a quick recap on the blog.
I did absolutely no training for this Short Triathlon, partly because I was super busy and partly because I just could not be bothered as I don’t really enjoy the training. I did keep up my strength training which would have helped me a lot!
I was nervous about swimming in the ocean as I’d never done a salt water swim before and well to be frank I suck at swimming. My nerves were slightly calmed when I discovered we were swimming parallel to the beach in only waist deep water which meant that I could stand up if I needed to.
The cycle was interesting, I enjoyed it a lot more than I have in the past. Most likely because it was shorter and I knew the route as I had run it at Round the Bays a few years earlier. It was pretty tough going around the bays at some points as the winds were strong and there were strong headwinds, it also meant there were some pretty good tail winds at some point on the way back in to transition.
The run was pretty good and was always going to be my best discipline as it is the one I am most practiced in, despite not having run since the Kinloch Triathlon and prior to that only running a couple of times in the 12 months preceeding it!
I have never really enjoyed runs that are 5km or less, I’m not really sure why I think the first 5km is always the hardest and after that you fall into a rhythm and just keep putting one foot in front of the other and it doesn’t feel like as much effort?
So, am I still saying no to Triathlons??? – That is a resounding yes! Never say never but at least in the short term I have no desire to complete another one, I just do not enjoy swimming in the slightest. I am however going to be giving at least one Duathlon a go!
Would you rather do a Triathlon or Duathlon??? – Comment below and let me know, I love hearing from you!
Completely agree with you there!!! I would love to do a duathlon one day but triathlon no way. Absolutely no way. I hate swimming big time!
You should totally do a duathlon, I reckon it will be a challenge but you won’t be hating every minute of it like the swim, well that’s what I’m hoping anyway!!
Duathlon!! So not a fan of swimming, especially in the open ocean. Good on you for doing it!
You should do one of the the scorching series Duathlon!!! It’s in welly!
