Yes Wanganui does have an airport, surprising I know.
What is not so surprising is the fact that you can only fly to two different places from our lovely little airport – which is double the number of places you could have flown a few years ago!
We took Mum n Dad to the airport to head to Vancouver via Auckland (The first place you can fly from Wanganui) last week.
If you ever visited Wanganui airport before about 5 years ago you would know it was (to put it frankly) a hole! They have spent quiet a bit of money on it now and it’s looking a lot nicer, with a little cafe where you can sit and watch the planes come in to land and take off.
Oh yes, the other place you can fly from Wanganui is Wellingon! This service only got added a few years ago, and no doubt the planes are just as small as the one to Auckland – seating about 18 people plus the pilots!
It was a perfect day for getting a flight and as they had an international connection we had a bit of a wait so enjoyed a coffee/tea in the comfy couches. [Not Pictured]
Now don’t go thinking we are all class and have totally upgraded, when you get off a flight and follow the sign to the baggage claim you will not find a baggage carousel! You will find the trolley they take the bags off the claim with chucked in the corner room, you then help yourself – if your unlucky like me your bag will be the last one so you have to wait for all the other 17 passengers to remove their bags first 😉 Ohh what a terrible life 😛
Do you ever go out to the airport just for a drive/drink? We occasionally do this when we go to Wellington on a nice day 😉
No I don’t but I LOVE the airport and now I might go do it since I know I won’t be the only one who does hehehe
I think there is quiet a few people who do it, on a nice day you can’t beat sitting back having a nice lunch watching the planes take off.
I think i am correct in saying that Air New Zealand run inbound and outbound, irregular flights between Wanganui and Taupo. Wanganui though is only a stopover on Taupo – Wellington or Wellington – Taupo flights. When they do operate the flight you can pick it up for $69 one way.
Thanks for the advice, I will keep that in mind for future trips!
