Travel: Versailles is huge

After a relatively sleepless night (thanks to some inconsiderate tarts in the dorm, drying your hair at 1.40am… really? Not necessary!) I awoke to more blue sky, which made me super happy as it meant I could attempt to get to Versailles.

I’m not sure how true it is but I heard that the Palace de Versailles is the largest Palace in Europe and I can understand that because the grounds are friggen huge. I walked around the majority of the main Palace buildings but barely touched the sides of all the gardens, and I walked for quiet a while outside in the snow as well.

I still can’t get over how old some of the stuff here is, and how big! I’d recommend going to Versailles although it is quiet expensive (18euro for the pass that includes audio guide and access to some other random buildings), I spent about 4 hours here and tire of museums etc very quickly so if you like that kind of thing then you will want to allow some extra time. I’d also allow some extra time if you went in summer as it would be nicer strolling around the gardens without the extreme cold. It would also be nice having a picnic in the gardens compared to sitting on the cold steps literally freezing your butt off 😉

To get to Versailles from Paris you need to take a RER train which is different to the main metro and costs just over 3euros each way, the automatic ticket machines are relatively easy to use so there isn’t even any need to attempt to use your terrible french.

So after 4 full days in Paris I am ready to move on, I’m glad the weather fined up enough to check out the sights under some blue sky yet I have no huge desire to come back, been there done that, didn’t get the t-shirt but got over 300 photos (yes really!).  Given that Paris was somewhere I had always wanted to go and was the start of the travel obsession some would find it interesting that I don’t really want nor feel the need to come back. However I had a feeling that was going to happen, so I’ll come back to France but only to see new places and check out some of the smaller places, unless my travel companion has a deep seeded desire to come to Paris then early tomorrow morning I say Au Revoir Paris.
