I arrived at the hostel in Barcelona after a flight, a bus ride from the Girona Airport (about an hour) and then a short walk to the metro stop, a metro ride and then another short walk to the hostel. And shall I say I arrived without getting lost, mostly due to following people who got off the bus to the metro and from there it was relatively easy.
By the time I had arrived and settled in it was around lunchtime so I grabbed the map I got at the bus station and saw that the Sagrada Familia was not too far away, within walking distance and coincidently this is the only major attraction that I knew Barcelona had before coming here. Remember I did little to no planning, woops!
The Sagrada is stunning yet very odd at the same time, they began working on it back in 1880ish and are still completing it today, it’s scheduled to be completed in 2026! It is a pretty grand cathedral yet it looks as though someone has dripped wax all over the top of it! It needs to be seen in real life, or google for someone who is a better photographer than I, AKA almost anyone to see some of the detail. I might go back on my last morning and try again as I was a little weary of pickpockets so didn’t like having my camera out.
After seeing the Sagrada there was conveniently a McDonald’s across the road and my tummy was seriously angry with me as I didn’t have a very substantial breakfast. The McDonald’s here (well the two I’ve been into, thank you McDonald’s for your trusty toilet facilities BTW), have machines when you enter them that you can place your order at, and change it into the language of your choice; hello english! Coolest idea ever, especially where you get a lot of tourists as I had no idea how I was going to order anything considering my spanish consists of Hola and Gracias and that is about it! Anyway I placed my order and walked up to the counter and a minute later my food was handed to me, so easy!
The rest of the day I just relaxed as I was pretty tired from getting up in the morning, I managed a trip to the supermarket to get some supplies including restocking my nutella! The hostel here has a gym just next door which you can go to for free and since I’ve been feeling a little lazy despite all the walking I went for a quick arm session which must have worked as my arms were pretty sore the following day.
Next up, Las Ramblas, Port and Beaches of Barcelona
