The ups (sometimes) and downs (mostly) of healthy eating

Today is a new day and I’m in a much better frame of mind than I was in yesterday health wise.

I am not going to dwell on it but thought I needed to write about it to get my crappy eating day off my chest.

Yesterday started out well, my first session by myself at the gym in the morning and I remembered all the exercises (Hurrah!) and my heart rate monitor and burned 237 calories in the 45 minutes I was there. I had a small vanilla up and go for breakfast (another win for someone who never used to eat breakfast) and a special k muesli bar for morning tea (approx 90 calories) whilst not having a hot chocolate for the first time since we got the machine.

Then came lunch, I fought the urges to run into town and get a sandwich and slice (I can never stop myself getting the slice – need to work on this willpower) and ended up going home and had 1/3 of a tin of creamed corn on 1 slice of wholemeal toast, so far so good… until I decided I was still hungry and needed something else (in reality I should have had a glass of water as there is no way I could be hungry 5 minutes after eating) and I found a small bag of twistee’s and scoffed them.

From here I should have been able to turn my day around get on with it and keep the rest healthy but I fell hard.

Afternoon tea rolled around and I was so hungry I didn’t feel my apple was going to cut it, so I decided to have a bag of salt and vinegar chips (the 40g pack not the family pack), and then decided I also needed something sweet after the salty and proceeded to hoe down a peanut slab (those things are nearly 300calories for a single bar WTH!). I did manage to stop myself from then getting some lollies as well like I really felt like.

It doesn’t end there, I had the crock pot on cooking Portuguese chicken (chicken with some seasoning, tomato puree, grated carrots and grated apple) and ended up getting fish and chips for dinner! I’m not even going to talk about all the peanut butter m&m’s that settled in my tummy either.

My win for the day was that it was the first day I haven’t had a hot chocolate since we got the machine!

I need to work my way out of this mentality that if I slip up I keep sliding down that slippery slide.

Today I got up and went to the gym and worked harder than yesterday and burned 270 calories in the approx 50minutes I was there, I also have netball practice tonight which I am going to wear my heart rate monitor for the first time and see what we actually burn (I don’t think it will be much but who knows), I’ve had my up and go for breakfast and entered most of my food for the day into my fitness pal already and I am going to stick to it! Portuguese chicken for dinner tonight (I guess the bonus is it only needs to be microwaved).

How do you stop yourself from going down that rabbit hole of temptation? What foods do you eat when you are craving something sweet or salty?

  1. I definitely hear you on this one. I get into the “ugh, I’ve been so good …I DESERVE it” mentality. Um, deserve what? Putting crap down my throat? wow, that’s really looking after myself and giving myself a REWARD isn’t it?! Not.

I just have to think, every day is a new day, every meal is a new meal, and every choice is a new choice. Maybe a new little mantra for us?

Here’s to making the best choice for our bodies! xx

    1. I like that, every day is a new day and every choice is a new choice! Definitely need to keep that one in mind!
