I’ve done it, I completed a quarter marathon!
That sounds way more impressive than saying I ran 10.55km, but that’s not the point. It is done & dusted, and now I’m looking for another event to enter!
But for now, a bit of a recap.
This run seriously kicked my butt and it was only half a km longer than the Round the Vines – that I didn’t feel too bad about at the time, in fact I started to enjoy it near the end.
The Rotorua Quarter Marathon runs through the sulfur pits & forest for over half of the run, which I wasn’t particularly prepared for – why I wasn’t prepared I don’t know, it is Rottenrua after all!
This combined with a lack of water stops – you did the track twice for the Quarter Marathon, once for the 5km and the only water stop was when you came around for the second time. I was also not prepared for this, I was dying for some water at this stage.
I don’t do well without water, I think that’s why I enjoyed Round the Vines, they had a tonne of water stops!
I managed to get one and a bit laps in before walking for 1 & a half minutes, then made it another couple of km before I had to walk a bit more -1 more minute.
With around 400metres to go I began to gain some speed for the finish and with about 200metres to go had to slow down as I literally thought I was going to throw up – more than once, not cool. My body obviously didn’t agree with something, weather it was lack of water, the heat, the speed or what I had for breakfast I’m not sure.
Oh well it is over and done with now, and I didn’t end up needing a bucket at the finish line, although I did look for one just in case.
I finished with a time of 58.53, which I am happy with. Before I knew it was a Quarter Marathon and I thought it was just a 10km I was aiming for 55minutes and I walked for 2.5minutes of it, so between that and the extra .55km I am happy.
My body is not happy though, yesterday (The day after the event) my legs, back and ‘non’ abs were so friggen sore, I must have had a good workout!
My heart rate monitor said the following;
Calories; 437
Fat Burnt; 56grams
Average HR; 196
Max HR; 206
Yeah now i’m convinced it’s not reading correctly, I’m sending it back for them to have a look at and if it’s faulty they will replace it.
What exercise did you do this weekend?
Edit to Add; I just looked at the results from the Quarter Marathon, my official time was 59.39 – not sure why that’s longer than what I had but anyway, the results!
Of 556 people that started only 501 finished and I got 98th / 501 for the people that finished the quarter marathon, and for females doing the quarter marathon I got 37/332 so I am over the moon considering I did really crap at that event!
