It doesn’t happen too often thankfully but it does happen: a bad workout…
That feeling when it just isn’t going to plan, your not feeling it and an injury is also preventing you from getting the most out of a workout.
It happened to me the other day. I have had a mysterious wrist pain that has been getting worse as the days go on over the past week, it thankfully had not affected my workouts, until then.
I arrived at the gym to find that I had left my ipod on the table in our apartment, which is always a bit of a downer for me as I really get into the music when working out and find it pushes me a lot harder than just having the background music in the gym.
The first exercise on my plan was not an issue – barbell rear delt rows, the second not too bad for the first set (upright barbell rows) the third there was a bit of pain (bent over dumb bell rows), although not in the hand with the dumb bell but in the wrist when it was leaning against the bench. The fourth exercise (Barbell bench press), I didn’t even managed a third of the set before I knew I had to give that exercise up for the day.
I tried to get through the remaining three sets of the first three exercises almost successfully until the last set when everything made my wrist hurt. This is where the sulking began and I was ready to leave the gym! I pulled my sulky face at the bf and declared I was about to give up. After a quick discussion of what I still had to go I decided I would at least try a couple of the exercises that I didn’t think would upset the wrist too much and managed to get through a few sets of each.
I did leave the gym early feeling sulky and defeated which is a feeling that I don’t think anyone enjoys! Part of writing this post is to get those feelings out and move on as well as showing others that it does happen, your not alone if you have a crap workout. And the fact of the matter is that there is no bad workout, only the one that didn’t happen.
This half workout was better than not doing one at all, and I am grateful that I was able to do what I did manage to do and that I have the ability to be able to get in to the gym and bust out a workout.
Tomorrow is a rest day and then it’s legs and then a game of netball so my wrist has three full days to sort itself out before we are back for another arm workout!
How do you deal with a bad workout?
