Hey, I’m Megan I’m 21 and am a Professional Squash Player ranked #41 in the world and #2 in New Zealand. I’ve just completed my Personal Training and Business course so looking forward to being qualified. I am a passionate foodie spending a lot of my life in the kitchen either creating things or eating them 🙂

Tell us about your current lifestyle and why you choose to eat a gluten free and whole food diet…
I train full time, as well as do a lot of coaching and some personal training when I’m not away overseas.  So I’m always really busy and find that when I haven’t fuelled my body well I really do struggle to keep up with my training and work etc. I used to suffer from terrible stomach pains all the time and often couldn’t train because of them and when I found out I was Gluten Intolerant I was a different person. I had so much more energy, wasn’t tired all the time and NO stomach pains!!

What does a normal training day look like…
I normally have interval training, or a circuit first thing in the morning. Then a few days a week I’ll have solo practice on court around lunch and then in the afternoon around 3-4pm I train with a few guys at my club for a couple of hours doing routines, games, and pressure sessions.

What does a normal days food look like?
I get up have a cold pressed juice first thing and then normally my oats or home-made muesli. Then go to training, after training I come home and normally have some home made GF bread or Vogels GF bread with a huge bowl of free range scrambled eggs or avocado and Tomato on Toast (I am a HUGE EGG FAN!!) For lunch I might have more oats, or salmon/chicken with some veges and quinoa or left over dinner. For afternoon tea a Smoothie bowl and some protein balls and dinner normally lots of potatoes or kumara (sweet potato), veges and Meat!! Desert is normally something that I created that day 🙂

What’s your approach to balance & moderation in life in regards to food?
I think it is really important to fuel your body!! I hate hearing of people on restricted calorie diets- You’re body is like a car – You need to fuel it to make it work! I think it is important to eat a majority of whole foods and things that haven’t been “really mucked with by humans” is my way of putting it haha as close to natural state as they can be. But is important that if you want to eat an ice cream or chocolate that you can still treat yourself sometimes.

What is your favourite form of exercise to do (other than squash!)?
I love most outdoor activities but my favourite thing to do is climb up our Wither hills at home and look out over Blenheim 🙂

What is your most memorable moment in your career so far?
Being at the Commonwealth Games, playing on the glass court in front of a huuuuuge crowd against the world number one would have to be on of my most exciting moments and I didn’t even win haha.

What is your favourite healthy recipe?
I would have to say my protein balls because I make these every few days and never get sick of them 🙂 Nuts, Oats, Dates, Coconut, Protein powder and Coconut oil will always be one of my favourites.

What is your number one tip for those who want to live a healthier life?
Just get creative with your food and you’ll start loving the taste and how good your body feels for it. If you struggle with healthy eating just start by adding in a extra veggie here in there and over time it all adds up. Also get in a bit of daily exercise whether its walk outside or some yoga first thing in the morning you will feel so much better for it.

What are your favourite healthy living blogs/websites or tools?
Megs and Soph is my number one of course!! But I also love Dr Libby, Julia and Libby , Petite Kitchen and Lola berry 🙂

Thanks so much for taking some time out of your busy schedule to answer these questions Megs! I am always in awe of all the yummy looking recipes you girls dream up as they always look super tasty as well as pretty! All the best for your future, both in squash and personal training!

  1. Nice to meet ya Meg! It’s cool that we can be foodies and athletic, most people think it’s one or the other. I started eating and cooking better for me and my husband when I started working out more. I love been properly fueled for a work out and it taste awesome too!

  2. First of all, Megan has incredible eye lashes – wow! I love eggs, so her enthusiasm for them is comforting! I love her attitude about experimenting with food – her favorite food day sounds good to me!

  3. She definitely motivated me! I def need to try to get up and do something first thing in the morning.

  4. I’m really enjoying getting to know your blog and your viewpoint, Amanda. I’m fascinated by this interview, because though I’ve heard of squash (of course), I don’t know that I’ve ever seen it played – and here you have one of the world’s top players. I love Meg’s attitude of food and nourishment, as well.

  5. Love her idea of balance with food. This is exactly what I’m trying to move towards as I focus on doing right by my body more often.

  6. So amazing reading everyone’s lovely comments 🙂 so happy to inspire a few people to try out a different recipe or do a extra workout or even come try squash!!
Thanks so much for the interview Amanda
