It’s almost February which means that your New Years Resolution to eat better and exercise more has likely up and left already. If you have made it through all the Christmas and New Years celebrations and are feeling like you need a little kick start then you might find Fab Feb helpful!
Fab Feb is a healthy eating challenge where you go Sugar Free for the month of February! Going sugar free for a whole month is a great way to reset your bodies addiction to sugar.
I have written before about sugar addictions, where I covered what sugar cravings are, why you get them and some handy tips on beating sugar cravings.
Going sugar free for Fab Feb doesn’t have to mean that you eating only boring foods for a month, it just means that you need to be a bit more aware of what goes into your body, you can still make yummy things like Chocolate Mint Bliss Balls, Grain Free Banana Bread and my Crockpot Spicy Pulled Pork.
While this is a healthy eating challenge it also has a bit of a twist and feel good factor as participants who register with Fab Feb will also raise money for fantastic children’s charities, like GlowKids who provide therapy for young children with neurological motor disorders like Cerebral Palsy.
The official rules of the challenge include the following:
- Avoid foods containing more than 10% sugar. If the label says it contains more than 10 grams of sugar per 100 grams, then it’s out!
- No sugary drinks, so things like sodas, soft drinks, fruit juices, beer and ciders are a no-go. Drink lots of water instead!
- Check the labels and don’t have foods containing high fructose corn syrup. Also watch out for ingredients ending in “ose”, as these are sugar by another name (e.g. glucose, sucrose, dextrose, fructose).
- No ice cream or other sugary desserts.
- No pastries, muffins, biscuits or lollies.
- No honey or syrups (including golden or maple syrup).
Rather than focusing on what you can’t have I’d suggest googling some paleo or whole 30 recipes, pretty much any of those will be suitable for the Fab Feb challenge as well. Just make sure you don’t use honey or other such syrups which occasionally show in some paleo recipes 🙂
You can find out more about Fab Feb, and register to support the children’s charities over on their website FabFeb.org.
Gargh! I would totes join you but Feb is wedding month! Cake baking and tasting to be done! Maybe I should do start now until the week before!
You totally could just start now up until just before the wedding! We are going to Hawaii at the end of the Feb and you can bet your bottom dollar I’ll be having ice cream by the beach at some point 🙂
Good decision Amanda. Sugar is making us fat. We are addicted to sugar. We are eating an alarming amount of sugar every year. And it’s getting worse. Our sugar consumption has quietly snuck up on us. It’s making us sick. It’s making us moody and it’s making us obese. Sugar is taking a devastating toll on our health. What we need to do to in order to live a cleaner, fitter, healthier lifestyle, is to learn how to quit. Or, at the very least, cut back your sugar intake and be aware of the dangers from a high sugar diet.
I think people are slowly beginning to get that a high sugar diet is not good for us which is great. It will take a while until it is completely mainstream but it’s good to know that people are starting to make changes for their health 🙂
