5 winning tactics for keeping your Hangry at bay

5 winning tactics for keeping your Hangry at bay

Have you ever turned into a bit of a monster simply because you were hungry? A new phrase has been termed for this ‘hangry’, when you get angry because you are hungry.

As someone who struggles to just eat three meals a day I 100% understand this term and that it is a completely real thing. One minute you’re all fine and dandy and the next minute, hunger pangs strike and you are ready to snap at anyone who gets between you and food!

5 winning tactics for keeping your Hangry at bay

// Hydrate
By keeping hydrated I mean increasing the amount of water you are drinking. It’s so easy to forget to drink during the day while you are busy working on other things. Water, is the most effective way to naturally hydrate. Increasing your water intake by drinking herbal teas is acceptable if you find it hard to drink more water. Often when we think we are hungry, we are actually thirsty, so taking the time to ensure you are adequately hydrated will help reduce those hunger pains and therefore reduce your hangry tendencies.

// Keep Busy
Have you ever noticed that you generally get that hangry feeling as soon as you stop what you are doing and take a break? Keeping yourself busy during the day (by being productive!), and doing the things you love are two of the easiest ways to reduce the hangry monster! Often when we are busy we forget to eat (not ideal), but if you take a decent lunch and dinner break, keeping busy can actually reduce the need to snack and you won’t even notice if you are hungry.

// Be Prepared
Always be prepared! I think this may be a scouts or girl guide mantra, but if you want to stop those hangry demons you also need to abide by it! The best way to be prepared is to grab a couple of packaged items and throw them in your handbag, glovebox of your car and desk drawer at work. What about the added sugars and other nasties in packaged food, I hear you say! Don’t fear, Tasti has brought out a range of nutritious snacks – Smooshed wholefood balls and Made Simple wholefood bars, both of which contain only a handful of natural ingredients, with names you can pronounce! My personal favourites are the Smooshed brazen berry wholefood balls and the Made Simple forest berries wholefood bars! Look out for them at your local supermarket either in the health snacks or muesli bars section.

// Take Notice
Listen to your body, take notice of when you can go without eating and when you can’t. By this I mean, take notice of when the hangry demons rear their heads. Are you okay feeling hunger pains in the morning and can deal with them (because you know you have eaten a good breakfast etc), but if you get hunger pains in the afternoon, everyone tries to avoid you so they don’t feel your hangry wrath? (This is me, 100%). Once you know when you need to ‘feed the beast’ so to speak, this will help you manage your hangry a lot easier.

// Eat your Protein
No matter what kind of diet (I use that term loosely here, I am not an advocate of diets as such) and lifestyle you follow, you need to ensure that you are eating adequate protein. Having foods which are high in protein help to satiate you for a longer period of time as the energy is released slowly. Ensure you get some form of protein in at every meal will help keep you feeling good over a longer period of time than say eating something filled with sugar which will send your blood sugars spiking and then crashing back down within a short period of time. Think things like meat, eggs, cheese, legumes and greek yoghurt.

There we have it, 5 winning tactics to help keep your hangry at bay!

  1. I would love to try the smoosh balls.
    For me when that hangry feeling sets in a cup of black coffee or green tea seems to work most times.
    Also fresh air, taking my mind off it and doing something outside.

    1. Go for a walk in fresh air if possible, do a spot of gardening maybe, drink water, eat carrots n apples!!

    2. Would love to try these products enjoy tasti trail mix. Always keeping toddler bag fill with emergency supplies of food or drink. Keep supplement in car for child who needs it and also always make sure I remember to eat. 😊

    3. My hunger usually kicks in while at work (boredom maybe lol ). I try to drink water or green tea and go for a walk around the office. I love these smoosh balls, especially the coffee flavour.

  2. I love these balls! I’m a big fan of keeping busy! But have found since I’ve adapted a more paleo type of diet that the urge to snack is SOOOO much less than it used to be!

  3. Have a cup of warm water instead. It’s surprising satisfying and the act of boiling the jug and pouring it into a cup is a good distraction from snacking!

  4. I quite often get hangry especially post gym workout if I’ve had to stop with preschooler and run an errand. I’ll either raid the kids lunchboxes for leftover snacks or pick up some energy balls , I’ve only tried the frooze balls but these look awesome and would love to try them.

  5. When I get hangry, especially between meals, I like to combine a fruit or vegetable and protein. Two of my favorites are an apple/golden raisins and handful of nuts and celery with nut butter. By the way, thanks for sharing your health journey with us!

  6. I need to eat better, snack better these would be perfect instead of reaching for a biscuit/s

  7. I definitely know hangry. I find if I get busy I don’t even think about food. I can spend 4-5 hours out in the gardens (with a bottle of water) and suddenly it’s late afternoon and I’ve missed lunch. Your made simple and smooshed products look like they’d be vegetarian?

  8. I distract myself by usually going out to my vegetable and tend to my plants, I’m a avid gardener! It’s a complete distraction and time waster plus I have beautiful organic homegrown produce to cook with!

  9. Getting rid of my ‘Hangry Demons’ i have my green tea at hand and also my water bottle with Chia Seeds tends to keep me less Hangry and hydrated.

  10. I think preparing your meals for the next day/week means you’re not tempted to reach for fast food/unhealthy food. I bought a vacuum sealer, so i can buy my veges in bulk and prepare them in vacuum-packed bags which last for ages in the fridge

  11. Making sure I have enough fat at each main meal helps me to get through to the next one without being hangry. I keep a container of nuts in my handbag for emergencies though :-!

  12. When ever I start feeling hangry I always drink some kind of fluids (mainly herbal teas) and go for a snack that packs a small glucose hit (for getting sugar to my brain quickly) combined with some protein to promote satiety. I make some really yum energy balls that do this and have date in them for glucose but some oats and nuts too for some good fats and protein

  13. Thanks for the tips, they’re gonna come in so handy.
    My hubby and I get hangry a LOT! Usually when we’re out and about in town after some annoying shopping we had to do. As soon as we notice it in each other it’s straight home (or to a cafe) for food.

    Oddly enough, I’ve stepped up my water intake quite a bit these days and haven’t noticed as my hangryness. Yay me!

  14. These balls look amazing. I always try to keep my self hydrated as well. Love salmon in my diet as it keeps HANGRY in control

  15. I just drink water and plenty of it helps fill the gap or protein bar though these smoothed balls were pretty awesome fillers 2 wen I tried thm

  16. When I am getting Hangry I enjoy having a hot drink (whether herbal tea or coffee), or sometimes grab a few almonds as they seem to help curb the hunger pretty quick.. 17. Omg im such a hangry monster! I have just weaned our 20month old but i am still eating like a crazy breastfeeding woman and i totally need to get my snack eating in line with a quick healthy and tasty treat that i can grab whilst on the run with our two full on girls xx

  21. Have been a warm (boiled) water drinker for years now, have a cup of green tea, now and again, not too close to bedtime though, due to the caffeine content πŸ™‚ If I absolutely must have something to ward off the hangry monster, I’ll munch on a small portion of raw brazil nuts.

  103. Water and distraction. I try not to go to far from work or home when im hangry otherwise I end up buying something which ends up leaving me feeling like crap later on.
