On the weekend I attended the Mangiare Italiano cooking class courtesy of Main Course in the Auckland CBD.
Main Course’s cooking classes are based on the cook schools of Europe. Main Course was the first Auckland cook school to offer a complete cooking class experience in purpose built premises.
Students enjoy a demonstration of the class dishes first, then roll up your sleeves and get into it yourself, wrapping up with consuming your efforts at our wonderful dining table with your class mates.
There are a huge array of classes to choose from including Fine Dining, Cheesemaking, Namaste India and Basic Skills. There are so many different ones to choose from – check out their classes page on their website.
I arrived at 6pm ready to start the class to see that our menu for the evening consisted of the following:
- Tagliatelle with Zesty Prawns, Roquette & Citrus Sauce
- Tortino Cioccolato with Berry Couli & Vanilla Ice Cream
I do not eat prawns and another lady was allergic to them so we worked together and created the same dish using salmon instead of the prawns.
We begun by making our dough for the pasta – which is super easy with only two ingredients (flour and eggs) and then set the dough aside in the fridge for 20-30minutes while we watched a demonstration on how to turn your lump of dough into lovely Tagliatelle, make the sauce as well as the dessert.
I was surprised at how easy it was to make the pasta, more people should make it fresh rather than using the packaged dry stuff that is full of preservatives!
I think I will have to try and make it for the parentals when I go back to Wanganui next, as they have a pasta maker, it is a gadget we may have to get for our place!
Check out the final products, how flash to they look 😉
Admittedly the pasta isn’t too photogenic however it tasted amazing! I would have never thought to use a citrus base for pasta it really was delicious.
While pasta and these fondants are definitely not every day foods I loved the simplicity and relatively short ingredient lists as well as the ease of creating them. If your going to treat yourself these are definitely well worth learning how to make them!
I would recommend Main Course as a great date night for couple’s or an awesome event for a social club or group of friends. I attended by myself and still had a great time and learnt some new skills.

Have you ever tried making your own pasta?
