I have been busy the past couple of weeks trialing the George Foreman Mix and Go and coming up with some yummy but healthy smoothie and shake recipes to share with everyone. After scouring the supermarkets and our local fruit and vege store I have come up with Five healthy and delicious smoothie and shake recipes for you. There should be at least one to suit everyone’s taste I reckon!
We also have a GIVEAWAY at the end of the blog post so make sure you stay tuned to find out how you could win yourself a Russell Hobbs Juiceman Press worth $79.99!!
I have used the George Foreman Mix and Go that I reviewed in my previous post to make these smoothies and shakes. If you don’t have one (go on treat yourself!) you can always use a blender or food processor if you have one (they are a pain to clean though – so make sure you make them and make one for someone else who will need to tidy up ;)).
So without further ado here are five healthy and delicious smoothie and shake recipes for you to try at home!
Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Shake
Ingredients:
1 Banana
1 Serving Chocolate Protein Powder
1 Tablespoon Powdered Peanut Butter (Or Regular Peanut Butter)
Ice
Water
I used Powdered Peanut Butter as we have quite a bit in the house at the moment and it is a lot lower in calories than traditional peanut butter (Think around 45 calories per serving compared to over 130 for a serving of standard PB). If you are counting calories give the powdered peanut butter a go, it’s not quite as tasty as full fat regular peanut butter but it has the peanut butter taste and you don’t really notice the difference in shakes.
Tropical Yoghurt Smoothie
Ingredients:
1.5 cups of tropical fruit of your choosing
2/3 cup of plain unsweetened yoghurt
1 Teaspoon or so of maple syrup (omit if using sweetened yoghurt – ours is homemade and quite tart tasting)
Ice – Fill up the rest of the bottle with ice
Water – a small amount to get things moving along nicely.
This was one of the smoothies I was looking forward to trying the most. I ended up using a combination of fresh mango, fresh pineapple and fresh honeydew melon. I wasn’t a huge fan of the honeydew and think it would be way nicer with just mango and pineapple but overall I did really enjoy this smoothie and the yoghurt is a nice different touch!
Green Smoothie
Ingredients:
2c Spinach (loosely packed)
1 Banana
2cm of cucumber (chopped into pieces)
2 tablespoons of crushed pineapple and 2 tablespoons of the pineapple juice
10 Small Strawberries
Ice – fill the rest of the container
Water
There are so many variations of the green smoothie around and after doing some research I learned that spinach is one of the best to start with as it is quite mild and matches well with a lot of different ingredients.
You can swap and change the ingredients in this smoothie to suit what you have in your fridge the common consensus in the Green Smoothie world is that for every cup of green you need 1 fruit, 2 cups 2 fruit etc. I added the cucumber as we had some that needed using and added the strawberries at the end as we had a lot of them to use as well.
Overall I find the concept of a Green Smoothie a little weird but the spinach was’t overpowering and you could taste the fruit in there more than the Spinach. I think these Green Smoothies are a good way to get some more vegetables in your diet or use up the old spinach leaves that are almost past their best.
Pina Colada Smoothie
Ingredients:
150ml Coconut Milk
200ml Coconut Water
1.5 Teaspoons Dessicated or Shredded Coconut (or fresh if you have it!)
5 drops Lemon Juice
2 Tablespoons Pineapple
2 Tablespoons Pineapple Juice
Ice
*Honey if required to sweeten – it was’t necessary as pineapple is naturally very sweet.
This was my favourite of all the smoothie, I absolutely love anything Pineapple flavoured and also love Pina Colada’s. You could reduce some of the coconut milk or water and add normal water or do fully coconut water and this would still be tasty. I do love the addition of a bit of coconut milk as it gives it a nice and creamy texture.
You could also add a little white rum for those special occasions to make it a real Pina Colada 😉
Banana Berry Smoothie
Ingredients:
1 Banana
1/2 Cup Strawberries (Or mixed berries)
Ice
Water
A nice basic smoothie and a good one to have in the repertoire for this time of the year since strawberries are reasonably cheap at the moment. We purchased some ‘seconds’ strawberries from a place where you can do pick your own out near Kumeu last weekend for $1.40 a punnet – bargain!
I have made up some freezer bags of chopped banana and strawberries so next time we want a banana berry smoothie all we have to do is dump one of the bags into the George Foreman Mix and Go with some ice and a bit of water and in no time we will have a nice cold refreshing Banana Berry Smoothie!
Competition Time!
As well as being lucky enough to review the George Foreman Mix and Go, we have also been provided with a Russell Hobbs Juiceman Press to GIVEAWAY to one lucky reader!
Now some lucky ready will have a use for those oranges that are too much hassle to eat and get ignored for the apples 😉
You can enter through the box below, you must be a Facebook liker to enter all the other options are just that – optional – although the more entries the more chances to win 😉
