If there’s one thing that I love about living in Auckland (Other than getting to be with the bf of course!), it’s the fact that there is always something to do and often these events are free!
Over the last couple of weeks we went to the Michael Jackson Cirque Du Soleil show – okay not free but is something that would NEVER go to a small town! It was an awesome show with great music (granted) although slightly lacking on the acrobatics one would generally associate with the Cirque. I didn’t think this was an issue though since it was engaging and the music was great!
Last weekend there was Art in the Dark, held in Western Park in Ponsonby – very close to the city. This is a free event which has been held since 2010. From the Art in the Dark website – “Participating in Art in the Dark challenges artists to evolve projects that not only fit the specific contours of the great, urban outdoors but that must illuminate the dark, using sustainable materials and energy wherever possible.”
In simple terms, there were cool lights in a park at night time. There were also A LOT of people and we always seemed to be going against the grain and battling to get through the park which made it a little less enjoyable. I’m not sure if there is much that could be done about it either given the nature of the park and where the tracks are and the art was exhibited.
It was definitely worth a look even if your like me and don’t really understand art!
Last weekend the Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix was also held in Auckland, just up the road from us in the Domain. I’ve seen this on the T.V numerous times and always thought it would be a cool event to go and watch or even participate in.
We went to have a look in the afternoon and caught the last few races including a rather impressive crash. Unfortunately my camera died after I had only taken a few photo’s so I don’t have anything amazing. (Mind you none of the photo’s in this post are very good!).
Sitting in the sun watching the Trolley GP gave us a bit of a taste of summer as it was such a nice day. I can’t wait to check out other cool (and free!) events around the city.
