Travel; No Sign of the Monkeys at Batu

I had a reasonable amount planned for my second day in KL, however I had forgotten just how long things take in this part of the world sometimes. I got up at a reasonable hour and made my way to the train station just down the road to head to the Chow Kit markets which the Canadian guy that helped me get to my hostel and gave me heaps of tips about KL had told me about.

The markets were pretty cool, heaps going on with lots of different fruits that I’d never seen before and fresh meat all over the show, if that was NZ it would be shut down having meat out like that in this kind of heat but that is how things are done here. There are hardly any tourists in this area, I think I saw about three other westerners in the time I was there. If you are not good with small spaces and heat a short visit will do you as it gets hot and a bit claustrophobic pretty quickly in there.

Afterwards I made my way on the train out to Batu Caves which are just put of the city center. The caves are a religious site so expect to see a lot of praying and a lot of people! I’m not sure if it was just because I visited on a weekend or not, however I imagine it would be pretty busy no matter when you visited. The one thing I really wanted to see when I was here were the monkeys I had heard about and been warned to hold onto your stuff as they often steal drink bottles and food off the tourists climbing to the top to enter the cave. Gutted didn’t even see one, not cool! I did see a lot of pigeons but that was it, not quiet the same as seeing monkeys steal people’s stuff.

The caves are worth the trip out there, and everywhere you will read about them warns that there are 272 steps to the top, it’s not that bad seriously, if your not good with stairs just take your time. Or make sure you do the caves after you’ve been travelling for a bit as you get used to all the stairs to the metro stations! It was very very dirty though with rubbish everywhere, not entirely surprising I guess what it wasn’t something I was expecting.

In the afternoon I was going to head out to the Bird Park where the birds fly around free as it sounded like a good way to spend the afternoon but then it rained and it hasn’t really stopped since so didn’t make it there the morning I was flying out either.

I did catch a small break in the rain to have a little wander around the area I was staying in and then decided I wanted to see the towers at night time so headed in to KLCC Suria (the shopping center under the towers) for a little look around, some dinner (BBQ chicken rice for approx $2.50NZD, so damn good!) and frozen yogurt just in time for the sun to set to see the water fountain show outside the towers and the towers at night, very pretty and a nice last night for this trip.

I’ve just finished my lunch, hmmm let’s make that dinner NZ time and had hawaiian sizzling chicken which had vegetables with it, so stoked have been cravings a plate of vege’s for quiet a while now! To celebrate both the trip and going home I also had a Pina Colada, all for around $22NZD.

When this post goes live I will be in Auckland! Can.Not.Wait!
